And now this December, the beloved series returns with its first TV movie — one that had to be rewritten in just three days. The comedic drama follows a fake psychic and his reluctant best friend as they help solve crimes for the Santa Barbara police department. But shortly before production, Timothy Tim Omundson, who portrays Det. Carlton Lassiter in the series, suffered a stroke. Omundson is now recovering. But even as the film’s writers were absorbing the news of his stroke, they had to do a heavy rewrite of the script. It was almost like a higher power took over. Maggie Lawson, who plays Omundson’s longtime partner, Juliet, on the show, still gets emotional talking about his health issue.
‘Psych’ Cast: Where Are They Now?
The real magic of Psych , though, is how it tells the procedural format to suck it. They never had any guaranteed money, but they sure had guaranteed fun. What could be more important in life? Eight seasons and episodes aired before Psych came to an end in , with two bonus films following in the years since. In celebration of Psych 2 : Lassie Come Home, which premiered July 15, Vulture decided it was time to revisit the series and give it the episode ranking it so richly deserves.

James Roday wormed his way into the hearts of TV fans through his antics and deductions as Shawn Spencer, the totally-not-psychic psychic detective that caught any criminal dumb enough to operate in Santa Barbara. But James himself hasn’t been as successful at solving another big mystery that baffles many people: how to make it big in Hollywood.
Today we examine why that might be so rough for him. James Roday’s been in the game for a long time, and he is a successful actor in that he regularly gets work and makes a living, which is a tough standard to get to like anyone who’s ever tried knows, especially while they’re making coffee on the side. But as far as getting over as a famous actor, Roday’s had a lot more strike outs. In fact, Psych has been his only critical and commercial success, as well as his most popular role.
Post- Psych , it’s been much the same. Roday himself is not as interested in acting much these days. Besides starring on the show, Roday started to wear a lot more hats around Psych ‘s fourth season, taking on roles as a writer, director, and a producer over the next five years that the series would run. After the show came to an end, Roday started doing more and more off camera work, directing pilots, episodes of TV shows like Rush Hour and Rosewood , co-wrote the movie Skinwalkers , and co-wrote and directed his own campy horror flick, Gravy , which came out in Roday’s also a born thespian, and he’s been doing a lot of work in the Los Angeles theater scene and occasionally off-Broadway.
As co-artistic director of the troupe, he has written, directed, and performed plays on stage with the group and still continues to work with them today, as well as teaching classes and workshops for those who want to know just how meant for the stage they are. Even after Psych ‘s success, Roday has never had the chance to take a large part in a big money movie. Roday’s had a lot of great opportunities in his nearly 20 year career to work on projects alongside huge, often legendary names, but the downside of that is those huge names can make it really hard for people to notice him and his work in the scheme of things.
James Roday Married, Wife, Girlfriend, Dating, Net Worth
Of course, the fellas doesn’t hesitate to get “the band” back together — especially for one of their own. Thankfully, star Maggie Lawson is giving fans a little clarity by confirming that Psych 2: Lassie Come Home will air this spring after Peacock takes flight this April. While Lassie’s fate will be the focus of the action, the film will also shine a spotlight on the marriage between Shawn and Lawson’s Juliet:.
Now we’re married. There’s no worry, there’s no issue. He’s doing his psychic thing and I’m doing my detective thing, but for the most part, we’re just enjoying married life.
Maggie Lawson and James Roday (Juliet and Shawn from Psych- I love that they are together in real life).
After much soul-searching, dog-napping, and singing with a pony wearing pajamas for some reason, Psych: The Movie ended with the one scene Psych fans have been waiting years for: Juliet O’Hara Maggie Lawson and Shawn Spencer James Roday have finally tied the knot! For most of the movie, Juliet was preoccupied with solving the murder of her partner, while Shawn was simultaneously attempting to help her and search for the engagement ring he lost in the series finale.
It may have stretched the suspension of disbelief to think these characters had gone years without getting married, all so they could recover a ring, but according to creator Steve Franks , it was important to him that the wedding take place in the narrative of the show instead of offscreen. Beyond finally seeing Shawn and Juliet take their vows, there were a few other elements of this wedding Franks had planned for a while. According to him, a chapel wedding with the big, white dress and hundreds of guests was no one’s idea of a perfect Psych wedding.
From the get go, a totally bananas setting for Shawn and Juliet’s nuptials was on the wish list. I wanted it to be with police lines and the villains getting carted off and body bags going through. That was the only way we could do a Psych wedding, and it’s just perfect to me. It’s exactly what I wanted to do. We weren’t sure how much they would be able to cram into a single hour, but, boy, did they dole out get it? Not to spoil too much, but the new Psych office in SF is an awful lot like a place you might go to buy a Gremlin. How do we know this?
James Roday plays the somewhat eccentric Shawn Spencer, a police consultant Shawn and Gus become Civil War Reenactors when a carefully choreographed “death” turns out to have been a real life murder. but Shawn’s investigation soon takes in him into an even stranger universe: speed dating. Letters To Juliet.
Psych 2: Lassie Come Home , then, is undoubtedly a love letter from the cast and crew of Psych to one of their own: actor Timothy Omundson and his grouchy yet heroic alter ego, detective Carlton Lassiter, both undergoing recovery for a stroke. Psych 2 , which premieres July 15 on Peacock, is a surprisingly poignant example of art imitating life while still ushering a crew of beloved characters through personal and professional life changes.
Someone shot Lassie! Recuperating in Santa Barbara, the usually sharp detective, his senses dulled by pain and meds, nonetheless notices a series of strange happenings in and around his recovery clinic: catatonic patients walking the halls, bleeding strangers lurking on the grounds at night… possibly even ghosts. With potentially supernatural happenings afoot, clearly this is a case for a fake psychic and his many-nicknamed-associate.
And when it comes to Lassie, Shawn and Gus are more than happy to return to their old stomping grounds, slurp some Jamba Juice, and unravel this eerie case. Ad — content continues below. You can hear the genuine warmth and affection that everyone involved has for Omundson. These highly emotional stakes ground a mystery that often veers into the ludicrous, even for Psych.

Was Shawn over-the-top and plain annoying? Did Lassie or Juliet or any of them make you light-headed from the sighing they elicited? I was always too intimidated on the other board, because it seemed like the whole consensus was Shawn was a horrible, horrible person, who never showed any “growth”, and there was nothing redeeming about him whatsoever.
Which, I totally disagree with. Maybe it’s a TV Tropes thing, but it’s something I don’t care for. Like how in “Lassie Did a Bad Thing”, Lassiter was suspected of killing that guy from the gang, who had just turned over State’s evidence and the Feds came over to take him. Shawn was instrumental in proving that it was that asswipe, Drimmer, who was the actual killer.
What peeved me? The show was good about continuity, so this acting as if the previous episode didn’t happen, peeved pissed me off to no end. Or when, shit, I’ve forgotten the name of the episode, but Juliet was being a bigass jerk to Shawn and Gus as well; she was acting just like Lassiter; no empathy like she normally has for them. I know it was after “Lassie Did a Bad Thing. And then there’s the whole double standard, which is actually the Tropes I was referring to.
When Lassiter was suspended, it was “personal” and he had to go out on his own to find the real killer; then the episode when Juliet’s brother, played by Jon Cena
